Baryshnikov and Mirren
When his jet goes down in Siberia on route to Japan, ballet dancer Nikolai Roschenko (Mikhail Baryshnikov) finds himself back in the USSR. Having defected some eight years before while on tour in London he is once again on Russian soil and subject to Soviet control. While the remainder of the passengers are released and his manager (Geraldine Page) frantically tries to locate him he is secretly placed with an American deserter and his Russian wife (Gregory Hines and Isabella Rossellini). These two have been enlisted to persuade him to renounce his defection and return to Russia, as has his former lover and dance partner, Galina Ivanova (Helen Mirren). Nikolai must somehow alert the US authorities to his whereabouts and find a way to escape to the West once again. The American deserter Raymond is, coincidentally, a dancer which leads to several dance sequences involving the the pair. Whether dancing alone or together, Hines and Baryshnikov make these scenes thrilling but two main elements of the film lack the same excitement.

There is no obvious chemistry between Gregory Hines and Isabella Rossellini, which robs their story of its vitality. Another problem is the escape. It never seems doubtful that Nikolai will regain his freedom, it is just a matter of how, when and with whom. Since these two stories form the central focus of the plot, much of the film lacks passion and suspense. The more interesting couple is Nikolai and Galina, there is real chemistry between Mikhail Baryshnikov and Helen Mirren. Unfortunately, they have only three scenes together. Aside from those with Baryshnikov, Mirren has only three or four other scenes, so the Mirren content in this film is rather low. Of the four major characters, hers is the only with any real depth or charisma (or am I biased?).

Baryshnikov and Hines are wonderful dancers but when they are not dancing they seem unable to carry the film. With only the dance sequences and Mirren's scenes having much impact the rest of the film is not very exciting. The great Geraldine Page has the thankless role of Nikolai's manager. Helen Mirren met her husband Producer-Director Taylor Hackford during the filming of White Nights.
