Savage Messiah
The eve of World War I finds talented young sculptor Henri Gaudier (Scott Antony) in Paris where he meets Sophie Brzeska (Dorothy Tutin), a Polish woman some twenty years his senior. They form a platonic relationship, move in together and hyphenate their names. Though very much devoted to Henri, the emotionally scarred Sophie has a pathological fear of sex and arranges for him to satisfy his "needs" elsewhere. While on one of these nocturnal adventures, he meets a lively young suffragette, Gosh Smith-Boyle (Helen Mirren).

Like most young men of his generation, Henri eventually goes off to fight in the War. He is killed shortly thereafter leaving Sophie to her grief and regrets. The love story between these two unusual people is intriguing and sweet, that it ended so tragically is unfortunate. A gifted artist, the world lost a great talent upon Gaudier-Brzeska's death.

Mirren's character, Gosh Smith-Boyle seems totally unrelated to the main story. She may have been a real person but her presence seems an intrusion. Perhaps the character was added to lengthen the film and add some spice. That she does...by gosh!!
